Questions & Answers

How does the Motability Scheme work?

Close

Okay, firstly, the purpose of the Scheme is to provide the simplest, most affordable way to run a brand new car. There are no credit checks or lengthy forms to fill out.

You just exchange your mobility allowance to lease the car that suits your needs best.

Everyday running costs such as insurance, maintenance and breakdown recovery, are all included in the weekly price.

So, you just need to pay for fuel and off you go. You will not own the car at the end of the lease.

How do I know if I'm eligible for the Motability Scheme?

Close

You're eligible to apply to join the Scheme if you currently receive any of these allowances and have 12 months remaining on your award:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance (HRMC of DLA)
  • Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC of PIP)
  • War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

How much will a new car cost me a week?

Close

Our choice of vehicles is split into the three price band options below. You can pick from the one that fits your budget the best:

  1. Cars that cost less than your weekly mobility allowance, so you can keep the difference.
  2. Cars that cost exactly the same as your allowance.
  3. Cars that cost the same as your allowance, plus a one-off Advance Payment.

Remember, whatever car you choose, insurance, servicing, repairs and breakdown recovery, are all included in the weekly price.

Can I get a car on the Motability Scheme even if I don't drive?

Close

Yes, you don't have to be able to drive to get a car on the Scheme. Lots of our customers don't drive.

That's why the insurance with your lease is for up to two named drivers.

So your car could be driven by a family member, friend or carer, it doesn't have to be you.

Also, you make like to know, you can lease a car as a learner driver, so long as you have a provisional license.

What about PIP reassessments?

Close

If you're currently in receipt of the HRMC of DLA and are invited for a reassessment, as long as you're successful in your application for the ERMC of PIP, you will still be eligible to apply to join the Motability Scheme.

If your allowance ended during your lease we would offer you the chance to buy the car, or you could return it with no further payments to make.

If that's the case, you may also be entitled to a £250 Return to Dealer payment.

Can I trade in the car I have now against a new one?

Close

You can trade in your privately owned car at most dealerships which could help finance on Advance Payment or optional extras for your new car.

And remember, a Motability Scheme car is brand new and your lease includes all the maintenance you'll need to keep your vehicle running smoothly.

So that means none of the unexpected repair bills, often associated with running an older car.

What if I need adaptations?

Close

If you need help with driving, accessing the car or storing a scooter or wheelchair, many adaptations can be fitted to your car for no extra cost at the start of your lease.

And, in most cases, are fitted so that your named drivers can continue to use the standard driving controls.

Will I definitely be able to get the car I need?

Close

Our expect staff will listen to your needs and requirements and advise you on what they will would be the best option.

I'm over 65, can I still join the Motability Scheme?

Close

Anyone that has the allowances mentioned previously is eligible to apply to join the Motability Scheme, regardless of their age.

You just need to have at least 12 months remaining on your mobility allowance when you join.

Please note, the Attendance Allowance cannot be used to lease a car through the Motability Scheme.

What if I'm family, a friend or carer?

Close

We want the Motability Scheme to be as convenient as possible for our customers and the people who support them.

That's one of the reasons we include insurance for up to two named drivers on the lease.

Also, if it's easier for the customer, they can nominate you to speak to us about the lease agreement on their behalf.

You can talk to us now and we'll happily take you through how it works.
